Happy New Year 2014!

Hi everyone!

Well, I want to start off by wishing everyone a Happy New Year 2014! I sincerely hope everyone’s dreams, wishes and hopes come true this year! I also wanted to sincerely thank everyone who’s been following my blog and keeping up to date with my very heavy-but-rare posting! 🙂

So, this is just another post I wanted to update everyone on what I’ve been upto recently… in terms of…since the last post.

I’m happy to say that I’ve finally completed one character for Project: Black Tears. Now, that might not sound like much…. but after the several designs (some fully-realized and some that never really made it) she’s now finished. It took ages to pinpoint and finalize what WAS the right look for this character, it was difficult to keep the identity of the character true to her nature and purpose and to stop it from slipping too far in any one direction. Without further ado, and less boring-dev-talk, here is the Doppelganger character in all her Marmoset Toolbag glory!

So, please let me know what you think about her, as always, all comments appreciated!

In light of the Doppelganger finally being finished, I was so happy I went ahead and decided to resurrect my love for mod / skin-making for Left 4 Dead. And… well let’s just say I went ahead and created this which is available for all to download and works with Left 4 Dead 2! 🙂

In other developments, I had a quick look back on the render quality of all my characters and found them to be quite disappointing, it seems that although my modelling techniques have improved over the years, the renders and the quality of the render’s haven’t moved an inch. So after watching several Digital Tutors videos on Rendering, I went into Marmoset with a new mindset and understanding to all the different material types and stuff. The result? Below:

As a direct comparison, here’s the older render of the exact same head mesh:

So, I think there’s been a great improvement. Just by adding a subsurface map for the skin, getting the highlights in the eyes right and adding a skin gloss map, I think the improvement is massive!

Hehe, well that’s all for now, have a great start to the New Year everyone and take care!

Mike
